A solicitor with four decades’ experience of the commercial real estate sector, Barry has extensive experience of commercial property acquisitions and disposals, for investment and for occupation, including leases and portfolio/asset management, joint ventures and collaboration agreements, working with public and private sector partners and HE/FE the university and technology sectors.
Over the years, Barry has in consequence gained in-depth experience of planning, CPO and environmental matters as part of the development process, infrastructure, development and collaboration agreements, urban regeneration, banks/funding, grants (historically, ERDF, ESF, RGF, etc.), EU state aid and post-Brexit, UK subsidy control regulations, especially relating to HE/universities, science, research and technology parks and the wider innovation sectors.
Barry has been widely recognized for many years for his expertise in commercial real estate by both Chambers and the Legal 500.
Made an Honorary Member of the UK Science Park Association (UKSPA) in March 2022, after a quarter century as a business affiliate representative, Barry actively participates in their members’ meetings around the UK each year, supporting their presentations, workshops and webinars.
Having contributed chapters to its first and second editions, during early 2021 Barry was invited to contribute to the now recently published third edition of UKSPA’s guide to “The Planning Development and Operation of Science Parks”, authoring the chapter on turning the vision offered by a masterplan into a built reality.
Interested in law- and prop-tech for many years, Barry has gained working knowledge of privacy and data protection/GDPR issues relevant to commercial real estate, and in-depth experience of AML/MLR issues, registration and compliance in now heavy regulated sectors such as virtual tenancy (mail drop) services.
Despite his involvement in the leading edge of technology and innovation, Barry is also experienced in handling pre-1925 titles and the voluntary registration of historically significant estates, most recently (2019/20) with properties with titles going back to the sixteenth century, relating to William Shakespeare and the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Based in the Midlands, Barry always welcomes the opportunity to meet with clients face-to-face and well as through video calls (Teams, Zoom, Facetime) and welcomes the opportunity to directly support his clients on a retainer or project-by-project basis, or if more appropriate to a given project, to work alongside a client’s existing in-house legal teams and external advisers.
