How to run your own legal business

As highly regulated professionals, with binding duties to their clients and the courts, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that solicitors are also businesspeople.

Whilst we love the law and derive immense satisfaction from helping our clients, we can’t forget that we also have to make a living!

Our profession is steeped in tradition, but solicitors of the 21st century need to embrace technology and innovation to thrive in today’s highly competitive legal marketplace.

Our profession provides a home for many personality types so some will feel more comfortable with the business side of things than others – not everyone is a natural rainmaker and nor do they need to be.

In the past, the route to success was partnership at a traditional firm. But for entrepreneurial lawyers today there are other options when it comes to building a successful legal business.

Keep it simple

In our previous blog: how do I set up my own law firm we looked at setting up your own firm from scratch, but there are now simpler ways to run your own legal business.

Working as a self-employed consultant can bring you all of the benefits of being your own boss, without the headaches of administration, management and politics often encountered in partnership firms.

In this way you can access the considerable opportunities in the legal marketplace.  Working alone (or with a team) you can build your business how you want to, without the significant financial risks involved in setting-up your own law firm.  It’s also not easy to stop running your own law firm; just look at the price of run-off insurance for a start.

Plug and play

As a platform for self-employed consultant solicitors, Nexa provides the perfect “plug and play” solution – all you need to get started with us is a phone, broadband and a laptop – it really is that simple.

In return for a market leading commission, we take care of all the regulatory requirements and provide comprehensive administrative support so you can get on with servicing your clients.

Unlike some legal platforms, at Nexa we are happy for our solicitors to market their legal business under their own brand name (whether that’s a team/business name or using your own personal name). See our blog: a brief guide to building your own law firm with Nexa.

Many of our consultants already use their own brand, but they don’t have to, many market their services under the Nexa umbrella which offers reassurance to their clients.

We are happy whatever route you take. You and your clients will be covered by our PII and our SRA registration whether you use your own brand or ours.
