Emma’s Story – Life at Nexa with Emma Bland

Continuing our ‘Consultants’ Stories’ series where our lawyers share their journey to becoming a consultant solicitor and joining Nexa, we caught up with Emma Bland.

Meet the consultant…

Emma is a private client lawyer who specialises in wills, probate and lasting powers of attorney. Here’s what she had to say:

“I did my training at Maples Teesdale, a traditional law firm in London and was later a partner at Thackray Williams in Bromley, a Legal 500 firm. Most recently, I worked at Woolsey Morris & Kennedy in Sidcup, on a part-time basis.  

“My journey towards becoming a consultant at Nexa really started because I wanted more flexibility; I really enjoy working from home and didn’t want to be tied to traditional office hours any longer. 

Going self-employed as a consultant seemed like the obvious way to achieve this. I did some research and spoke to a couple of solicitors who were already at Nexa. They were so positive about their own experiences that it really gave me confidence that I was on the right track. 

The one thing I would say to anyone thinking of becoming self-employed as a lawyer is that it takes time to build up a caseload – so don’t rely on having a steady income right from the start – but don’t get disheartened, you will get there. 

My experience at Nexa has also been incredibly positive, everyone here is helpful, supportive and friendly – I haven’t missed the traditional office environment at all. This way of working has truly enabled me to balance my family and other commitments much better – I even have time to eat properly and exercise which is a tremendous boost to my well-being!”
